YouTube announces increase in maximum video length

The maximum length of YouTube videos has now increased from 10 to 15 minutes. The new maximum upload time of 15 minutes had previously only been for YouTube partners but is now available to all members uploading content.

Advances in YouTube’s content-ID technology are being named as the reason for the increase, with their successful ID system meaning tighter automatic copyright regulation on all uploads.

So what does almost 16 minutes of upload time mean for YouTube users?

While the news means less irritating video-splitting and less unnecessary edits to adhere to 10minute maximum uploads, how useful is this extra time? Research by TubeMogul would suggest not very; viewers rarely make it past the first minute of online video, moving on in a matter of seconds and rarely making it to the 10 minute mark, let alone the new 15.

These statistics suggest that traditional YouTube videos might not benefit, but the increase raises interesting questions about how future uploads might develop to make the most of the potential 15 minutes.
